The Civil Rights Act, passed by the U.S. Congress in 1964, attempted to end discrimination based on race, color, religion, or national origin. Title VII, which banned discrimination by trade unions, schools, or employers involved in interstate commerce or doing business with the federal government, also applied to discrimination on the basis of sex.
