The cover of George Lipsitz’s biography of black activist Ivory Perry shows Perry blocking traffic during a “stall-in.” Like “sit-ins,” “stall-ins” were a nonviolent tactic of civil rights activists and were designed to disrupt normal life, protest against discrimination, and draw attention to the movement.
