The “New Deal” was the name given to the federal government programs created by President Franklin Roosevelt in the 1930s to counteract the effects of the Great Depression. Government agencies such as the Public Works Administration and the Works Progress Administration oversaw public works projects, including road building, that provided jobs for the unemployed. Other agencies, such as the Federal Housing Administration and the Home Owners’ Loan Corporation, helped people, especially the poor, to obtain or refinance home loans.
