Frightened Livestock This 1910 ad for the American Locomotive Company in Life magazine shows a group of people touring in a rural area. This being an automobile advertisement, the cattle in the field next to the road are not frightened by the car. The Vanderbilt Cup referred to in the ad was the first major trophy in American automobile racing. Founded by William K. Vanderbilt II, himself an avid racer, the Vanderbilt Cup was first held on Long Island in 1904 over the objections of many local residents and politicians. An American driver in an American car first won the race in 1908; an ALCO car, driven by Harry Grant, won in 1909 and 1910. |
