Utilizing witty ads, Volkswagen drove home the advantages of its cheap, efficient, slowly evolving little sedan over the expensive, gas-guzzling, ever-changing products from Detroit.

Officially called the Type 1, the Volkswagen was universally known as The Beetle. Without the plate on the bumper, only an expert can distinguish this 1962 Beetle from a 1952 or a 1972.
